Located in the northeast corner of New London County, Voluntown is a rural community consisting of 39.8 square miles with two-thirds of the town made up of state forest. Pachaug State Forest offers many outdoor activities; such as hunting, camping, hiking and horseback riding. The town hall and library are located in the Village Center, along with the PreK-8 school, Constitution Field, the walking track, and gazebo. Voluntown was Incorporated in 1721 and has a rich history of textile mills, historic buildings, the Civilian Conservation Corps. (CCC Camp), folklore and was originally known as “Volunteer Town”.

Beach Pond Drawdown Informational Session with DEEP
There will be an informational session on the proposed four-foot Beach Pond Drawdown that is being requested for the winter of 2026. This session is with members of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to discuss what is expected from property owners who are planning weed remediation or retaining wall repairs in the waterway by their property. DEEP staff will inform property owners on DEEP policies, procedures, expectations, and answer questions regarding a deeper pond drawdown. This session is being held via Zoom on Tuesday, April 22 at 10:30AM. The zoom link is: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82544767362. This informational session will be recorded and will be posted on the Town of Voluntown YouTube channel. If you don’t have access to zoom, we will have zoom access in the Town Hall Meeting Room where people can participate. CT DOT Announces Road Construction on RT 138 in Griswold: One Lane and Full Road Closure Planned
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing that the replacement of Bridge No. 07036 will be performed on Route 138 in Griswold. This project is scheduled to occur on Tuesday, April 1 and be completed on Friday, November 28, 2025.
The project 0057-0122 consists of replacing the existing culvert with a 9-foot span by 8-foot rise precast box culvert in place of the existing pipe culvert. Invert of the box will be buried under 1’ of natural streambed material. Installation of new headwalls, wingwalls, cutoff walls, and return walls at the inlet and outlet as well as the installation of a preformed scour hole at the outlet and a riprap pad at the inlet. Construction has temporary and permanent impacts towetlands. Overhead utilities are permanently being moved from the south side of the road to the north side.
CTDOT Project No. 0057-0122 was awarded to The Brunalli Construction Company, Inc at a cost of $3,020,333.17 on September 20, 2024, and is scheduled to be completed November 28, 2025. This project is administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 2 in Norwich.
LANE CLOSURE/DETOUR INFO
Motorists can expect one lane alternating traffic with the use of flaggers as well as the installation of temporary traffic signals on Route 138 on the bridge approximately 0.2 miles west of the intersection with Route 201. A 3-week full road closure and detour of Route 138 will be implemented during the summer months when school is out of session. A future press release will be issued when the time nears.
Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in this area.

In a heartfelt effort to honor and recognize the courage and sacrifices of living World War II veterans, Connecticut Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz, in collaboration with Veterans Affairs Commissioner Ron Welch and Major General Francis Evon of the Connecticut National Guard, has announced a commemorative ceremony. This event will be held on Monday, May 19, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Governor William A. O’Neill State Armory, located at 360 Broad Street, Hartford, CT.
