Transfer Station Assistant – Substitute
The Voluntown/Sterling Transfer Station is seeking a substitute Transfer Station Assistant to work as needed at the Voluntown/Sterling Transfer Station. This position provides assistance to the Transfer Station Operator, customers, and other town staff that may be required to perform work assignments at the Transfer Station. This position will assist town residents with solid waste, recycling and bulky waste.

If You Pay Taxes, Permits, Fees, to the Town of Voluntown or Transfer Station by Check
The Treasury Department has added additional security measures and increased functionality to Town or Voluntown and Transfer Station operations. The process known as Remote Deposit Capture (RDC) will reduce the time to clear checks presented to the Town or Transfer Station for payment of Taxes, Permits, Fees, etc. Previously, the process may have taken a week or more to have a check clear your bank account; it may now clear in a day or two. Please make sure that funds are on deposit and available when you present a check. Don’t risk incurring overdraft fees from your bank and NSF fees from the Town or Transfer Station.

The transfer station will be closed on the following days:
- Thanksgiving Day and day after
- Christmas Day and day after
- New Years Day
- Good Friday
- Memorial Day weekend (Closed Saturday)
- July 4th
- Labor Day weekend (Closed Saturday)
Rules
These rules are put in place for the safety or residents and staff per order of the Voluntown/Sterling Transfer Station Commission. Violators could have their permits revoked.
- Permit stickers must be placed on the vehicle where they will be visible to the Transfer Station Operator.
- All materials brought to the Voluntown/Sterling Transfer Station MUST come from the permit holder’s property.
- All vehicles are to stay to the left of the yellow lines
- All vehicles with bulky waste are to stop at the office first
- Do not enter the dumpsters
- Please do not throw glass in the container. Please slide it down the ramp.
- This is a non-smoking facility.
- Please wear shoes at all times.
Pay Per Bag System
For residents and businesses using the Transfer Station, household trash (municipal solid Waste-MSW) is to be placed in specially marked bags. These bags are available at the Transfer Station in multiples of five at a cost of $7.50/$10.00 per bundle. Only household trash is required to be placed in these bags. Items that are to be recycled should be separated and placed in the proper containers.
Recyclable Items(NO CHARGE)
*UPDATE ON PLASTIC RECYCLING: We no longer can recycle plastic, as there is no market for it, therefore, no one will take it. The plastic can be placed in the blue container next to the household trash bin (see photo below). Household 13 gal trash bags can be used, no paid bags are required. The plastic is burned in the trash to energy facility. Cans still have their own container.
Aerosol Cans Must be empty, put with scrap metal
Cardboard All cardboard including food boxes (cereal, milk cartons) place in the compactor
Egg Cartons If cardboard, place with newspaper, if Styrofoam, discard with household trash (MSW)
Glass Containers Place in container marked for glass.
Junk mail, catalogs, magazines, envelopes, fax paper, white & colored paper
Newspapers May be placed in brown bags for ease of handling
Metal food cans This includes metal caps from glass jars
Plastic containers Clear #1, colored #2. lf possible, please crush and/or compact
Scrap metal All scrap metal accepted
Used motor oil must be placed in the proper storage container
The following items are not accepted at the Transfer Station:
Leaves
Gasoline
Propane Tanks
Hazardous Materials
Anti-Freeze
Bulky Waste
Bulky waste is scrap wood, large furniture, sheetrock, and other large items. These items can be disposed of in the bulky waste container. ANY LARGE ITEMS THAT REQUIRES COMPACTION MAY BE CHARGED AT THE DISCRETION OF THE TRANSFER STATION OPERATOR.

Compact Pick-up: $25
Trailer: $30
Shingles and/or sheetrock will be classified as a full load.
There will be a $5.00 charge for the following items
Washers, Dryers, Stoves, Chairs, Sofas/Couches, Recliners NOTE: ALL METAL MUST BE REMOVED FROM SOFA/COUCH, CHAIRS, RECLINERS
There will be a $10.00 charge for the following items
Refrigerators, Freezers, Air Conditioners, Dehumidifiers
There will be a $4.00 charge for Automobile Tires (Car & light truck tires only; tires must
be off the rim).
Household Hazardous Waste

Voluntown and Sterling are participating communities in the Southern Connecticut Regional Resources Recovery Authority. Hazardous municipal waste collection are held April through November, these 9 annual collections change location each month, providing free, convenient hazardous waste disposal for home owners. Participating community residents can go to any or all of the 9 collections.
Always visit scrrra.org to verify dates and locations. They sometimes change.

Free Electronics Recycling for Voluntown & Sterling Residents- Take2
Residents may, free of charge, bring their unwanted electronics to the Voluntown/Sterling Transfer Station located at 514 Brown Rd in Voluntown, CT. Hours are Wednesday through Saturday, from 7:00am-2:45pm. Reminder: May – September, Thursday hours change to 11:00am-6:45pm.
All electronic equipment is safely packaged by Take 2 and transported to their facility for responsible and secure recycling.
What is and isn’t accepted?
Accepted materials include, but are not limited to: computers, laptops, fax machines, monitors, TVs, cell phones, tablets, video games, game consoles, VCR/DVD machines, remotes, keyboards, computer mice, modems, bulbs, batteries, small appliances, and stereo equipment.
Unaccepted materials include: smoke detectors, ballasts, propane tanks, paint, household hazardous waste, and appliances containing freon- air conditioners, refrigerators, and dehumidifiers.

Take 2 Inc is a Waterbury based electronics recycler. Take 2 is approved by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection as a Covered Electronics Recycler in conjunction with the Connecticut’s Electronics Recycling Law, RCSA 22a-638-1.
Residents may also, free of charge, bring their unwanted electronics to Take 2’s facility located at 567 South Leonard Street, Building One, Waterbury, CT. Hours are Monday through Friday, from 7:00am-3:30pm and Saturdays, from 8:00-noon. Additionally, residents may bring their electronics to any of Take 2 Inc’s electronics recycling events.
